MFA Registration Campaign
Good Afternoon
To continue to keep all accounts secure within the University, IT will be enabling a second MFA Registration campaign. This will require you to complete sign up for MFA on your account if you haven't already done so when you next login to QMU systems.
Having MFA on your account is one of the best ways to prevent bad actors from gaining access to your account without you knowing. The sign up is quick and easy, and you will only be required to sign up once.
Once you have completed sign up, as before there will be no prompts on campus for functions like accessing Office applications. The details will be stored securely with Microsoft and can be changed by yourself at any time.
There are guides to complete sign up, as well as updating your details, on the QMU website should you need them.
/study-here/learning-facilities/it-services/mfa
We will be turning on this feature on Thursday morning (February 13th).
Many thanks, IT

Parking
Parking on Campus
We would like to remind everyone that the University car park is particularly busy at the start of the semester. Due to high demand, we cannot guarantee parking spaces for all users. To avoid inconvenience, please arrive early and be prepared for potential queues. You may also wish to consider alternative options such as the Park and Ride at Newcraighall, which is within walking distance of the campus and connected by direct bus services. Additionally, we encourage you to explore public transport and sustainable travel options.
For more detailed information on parking, public transport, and sustainable travel options, please visit our webpage.
Parking in Local Areas
It is important that staff and students respect our neighbours and adhere to parking restrictions in the local areas surrounding our campus. Please note that parking on Queen Margaret University Drive is not permitted, and enforcement is carried out by East Lothian Council on all roads surrounding the campus. Additionally, parking on kerbs, footways, and verges is not permitted as it is unsafe and causes damage.
Musselburgh Railway Station Car Park
Parking is only for ScotRail customers using Musselburgh Station. Non-customers using the station car park may be subject to enforcement action by British Transport Police under The Railway Byelaws. Those parking outside of marked bays, on double yellow lines, or in disabled bays without a Blue Badge will be fined.
Musselburgh Controlled Parking Zone
To ensure that our neighbours can access their homes, parking within the residential streets adjacent to the campus is controlled by East Lothian Council through limited waiting times and permits. To avoid receiving a 瞿100 penalty charge notice, drivers should comply with the restrictions indicated by the signs and markings displayed on the streets. Further details can be found . For the benefit of our neighbours, please respect these restrictions and refrain from parking in residential areas around the campus.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Access using TOR and Proxies
QMU has implemented new measures to block access to its systems via TOR and anonymous proxy servers. This step strengthens security, reduces risks, and protects sensitive data from potential threats.
TOR and proxies are often used for anonymity but can also enable malicious activities such as cyberattacks and unauthorized access. Blocking these tools ensures:
Prevented Unauthorized Access: Only verified users can connect.

For more detailed information on parking, public transport, and sustainable travel options, please visit our Location and Getting Here webpage.

VMware Horizon is now Omnissa Horizon
Last year, VMware sold the H棗娶勳堝棗紳 platform to O鳥紳勳莽莽硃.
The latest update of the H棗娶勳堝棗紳 client removes the V紼滄硃娶梗 branding and replaces it with O鳥紳勳莽莽硃.
You can find the new icon in the start menu by searching for H棗娶勳堝棗紳.
The look and feel are slightly different, but the application works as before the update. The VMware Horizon client will continue to work if your device has not update as yet.

QMU Devices will automatically be updated to Omnissa Horizon over the next few days, and you can access it via the instructions above if VMware Horizon is not shown.
Personal Devices (updating pre-installed Horizon client)
VMware Horizon may automatically be updated to Omnissa Horizon based on your operating System and client settings.
If you still have VMware Horizon installed, then it will still work but we recommend updating to the latest release when convenient.
- Open VMware Horizon client
- You will see M聆勳喧.梁鳥喝.硃釵.喝域 server screen
- Click on the three dots at the top right
- Click software update
- Check for updates
- The application will install the latest version of the software (Please note this may request a reboot in some scenarios)
Personal Devices (New install)
If you have not installed Horizon as yet, then you can get the Omnissa Horizon client from
Remote Access Guide has the configuration settings required to set up Omnissa Horizon Though it does reference VMware Horizon, the procedure is the same. The instructions will be updated to reflect the change from V紼滄硃娶梗 to O鳥紳勳莽莽硃 as soon as possible.
Horizon HTML Access
The access method above has not changed because of the above, and access will continue as normal.

ASSaM Seminar: Development education and the scandal of the human: the grammar of silence and erasure
In this seminar we take up the question of silence as an analytical category in order to reflect on the ways in which global citizenship education (GCE) remains largely Eurocentric in its orientation. We argue that at the heart of GCE is the assumption that the global citizen is a white, western and liberal subject. Consequently, in centring this European (universal) subject, what is elided is an account of the technologies of dispossession, deprivation and subjugation of the Others of global citizenship: those whose humanity has been/is being called into question and who are marked for harm. Finally, this seminar articulates ways in which, as 3 teacher educators, we can resist (re)producing in our practice the silences on the ongoing struggle over the meaning of the human.

For those of you who are new to QMU, TGIT (Thank Goodness it's Thursday) was a student support programme we ran in partnership with the SU over the previous two academic years to address the cost-of-living crisis and feelings of loneliness and isolation among our student community post-covid. We are reviving it for one night only in advance of the end-of-term assessment and examination period. Everyone is welcome! We will be serving up a delicious Christmas dinner (vegan, halal and gluten-free options available) as well as pudding! Come on down and take in the festivities, as Sir Paul Grice will be serving up turkey and trimmings in his Santa hat, along with a team of academic and administrative staff in their best/worst Christmas jumpers. - We have PALS Leader training scheduled for next Tuesday, 3rd December from 10am 4pm.
- You can book a place on
Want to know more first? Here is some information about PALS:
PALS Sessions are student led learning sessions. They are a relaxed, fun and informal way to give and receive support for learning at 17勛圖厙. As a PALS leader you will receive training and you will have the opportunity to help your fellow students in the years below you. PALS is an internationally recognised programme, and, as well as being rewarding, being a PALS leader will stand out on your CV as professional development: helping you build leadership skills and transferable skills.泭
As a PALS leader, you work with other trained leaders (and a staff coordinator) to design and run supplementary support sessions for students in years below you in modules you have yourself completed. You would be joining our existing team of fantastic Leaders: you will be trained in designing and facilitating sessions before you start, and you will supported by the PALS coordinator and your PALS-Leader colleagues throughout. It is a volunteering opportunity, so all regular PALS sessions are unpaid, but we often have opportunities for paid work over the course of the year too. Its also relatively flexible; on average PALS Leaders tend to spend approximately two hours every other week on their PALS work.泭
If you would like to find out more about PALS, we have information in the following places:

繚 Instagram
If you would be interested in becoming a PALS leader, or finding out what is involved and what you can get out of it, please email PALS@qmu.ac.uk.
If you are then still interested in becoming a leader, sign up to the training!

Join us in-person and online. Staff and students welcome. Email RMosch@qmu.ac.uk if you would like to be added to the calendar invite.泭
Decolonise Research NOW is a conversation and learning space at QMU, in which we interrogate the impact of colonialism on our institutions. As an informal, interdisciplinary collective space, we cultivate an intellectual environment to critique colonial and decolonial thought.

TGIT Festive Edition on Thursday 5th December from 4:45pm - 6:15pm in Guthrie's
Hello Students! We will be holding a one-off TGIT event on Thursday 5th泭December from 4:45pm - 6:15pm in Guthrie's. It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas...!

ILP/Extension Submission Dates During Festive Period
The University will close during the festive period on the evening of Monday 23rd December 2024 reopening Monday 6th January 2025.
ILP/Extension Submission Dates
A standard submission date for both hard (as directed) and electronic submissions, for all students with an ILP or those granted an extension due to extenuating circumstances has been agreed. Where the submission date falls between Tuesday 24th December and Friday 3rd January 2025 you should now submit on Monday 6th January 2025. As an example, if your original submission date is 18th December, and you had an extension (either due to an ILP, or extenuating circumstances) of 7 days, you would normally submit on 25th December 2024. However, due to the closure over the festive period, your submission date is 6th January 2025, when QMU reopens.
Please be reminded that there will be no technical support, with respect to electronic submissions, from 16:30 on Monday 23rd December until 09:00 on Monday 6th January 2025.
All the best for the assessment period!
