Arts, Festivals and Cultural Management (Single Modules)

Do you work in arts management and want to take your career to a new level? Consider studying a study single module - a flexible, part-time way to develop your professional skills and knowledge.Ìý

The single modules available are part of ourÌýMA in Arts, Festival and Cultural Management and could be the stepping stone to achieving an MA if you wanted to progress your studies.

Arts, Festivals and Cultural Management (Single Modules): The course in brief

Funding, recruitment, sustainability, leadership, international development – there are many burning issues affecting the management of arts organisations and festivals today. As a professional in the field, what is your best way to engage with them? How can you guide an arts organisation into a successful future in such uncertain times? These single modules will deepen your understanding of modern arts management and equip you with some very useful contemporary skills.

CPD students also benefit from the full range of books, journals and other resources available in QMU’s Learning Resource Centre. Many of these are available online. You can also call on QMU’s student support services.

How will I be taught?

Structure, duration, delivery and outcomes

Structure: Module can be taken as a standalone however, on completion of one module, you may also be interested in progressing to the PgCert Arts Management or MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management.

Delivery: See module tab below for individual module for detail on delivery. We endeavour that allÌýour modules take place face-to-face at the QMU campus.

Outcomes: All modules are worth 20 credits. On completion of a single module, you may chose to progress your studies to a named award:ÌýPgCert Arts Management or MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Teaching could comprises a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies and projects. Assessment could take the form of essays, reports, exams and presentations.

Modules

Strategy and Sustainability within Cultural Organisations

This module will support students to critically reflect on economic, social, and environmental sustainability in the arts and cultural sectors and develop strategic knowledge, skills and competencies to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Delivery Pattern:ÌýThese classes are block taught (4 Fridays within the semester)

Arts Leadership and Management in Practice

This module will support students to become reflective leaders in the arts, confident in their ability to employ and adapt theory in relation to the organisational contexts in which they may work.

Delivery Pattern:ÌýYear Long (with 2 taught sessions on campus followed by a suite of field trips, talks and activities)Ìý

Fundraising, Development and FinanceÌý

This module will equip students with a critical understanding of the principles and practices of fundraising, development and financial management.

Delivery Pattern:ÌýThese classes are block taught (4 Fridays within the Semester.)

Contemporary Debates in Cultural Policy

This module will provide students with a critical understanding of key cultural policy debates that impact the work of managers in the cultural and creative industries.

Delivery Pattern:Ìý10 weekly in-person classes (Semester 1: September - December)

Designing Qualitative Research

This module will prepare students to undertake a postgraduate research project by developing their knowledge and understanding of qualitative research methodologies and methods.

Delivery Pattern:Ìý10 weekly in-person classes (Semester 1: September - December)

OR

Evaluating Arts and Cultural Projects

This module will provide students with the knowledge and understanding to effectively design and execute the evaluation of arts and cultural projects. Please note that to undertake this module, you need to have access to a current cultural project to evaluate.Ìý

Delivery Pattern: 10 weekly in-person classes with some online components (Semester 2: January - April)

Arts, Festivals and Cultural Management (Single Modules): Entry requirements and application information

Entry requirements

A UK honours degree or equivalent OR significant work experience in cultural organisations or festivals.

International: Where your honours degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to provide evidence of English language competence at no less than IELTS 6.5 with no individual component score less than 6.0.
