Katherine Nelson (BA Hons in Philosophy and MSc in Applied Linguistics) is a Lecturer in Drama and Performance, and is also Programme Leader for BA(Hons) Performance in the Media, Communication and Performing Arts Division.

Kate has a degree in Philosophy from Newcastle (1987), a Diploma in Theatre Directing from Drama Studio (1991) and an MSc in Applied Linguistics from Edinburgh (1996). She started working at QMU in 2005. In the Drama & Performance undergraduate programme, she lectures on text & performance, research skills and teaches options on text based theatre making in years three and four of the degree. Kate’s specialist area of knowledge lies in new writing and translation for theatre. She is currently the admissions tutor for Drama and Performance.
In addition to working part-time at QMU, Kate is Artistic Director of Nutshell, an award winning independent theatre company which commissions new plays and translations for production and touring. Nutshell’s last two shows, Allotment and Thread have won Scotsman Fringe Firsts and have toured UK wide. Previous critically acclaimed shows with Nutshell include: The Play O’ The Wather, (Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, Tron Theatre, Glasgow) Meat, (Underbelly, Edinburgh Festival Fringe), Crestfall (Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre & Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh) and Stars (Traverse, Edinburgh Festival Fringe).
Kate also works as a freelance director and has worked at the Traverse, The Citizens, Oran Mor and Pitlochry Festival Theatre amongst others. She has been a reader for a number of new writing companies and a judges for various national, new writing competitions. She is a member of the board of trustees for the Independent Theatre Council and a member of Stage Directors UK.
