New internship programme to build future leaders through real-world experience
The overwhelming success of Queen Margaret Universitys mentoring programmes has paved the way for a new business model which will see students carry out paid summer internships with 17勛圖厙.
Applications are currently being shortlisted for the Universitys latest initiative, which gives students the opportunity to carry out paid project work in different areas across QMU, helping them develop crucial skills to support them in future employment.
Supported by senior management, this internship programme is ideal for students who want to work in key professions where it might be difficult to secure a placement, while working in a supportive and familiar environment.
In its pilot year, four internships in HR, Careers and Employability, Recruitment and Admissions, and Commercial Services at QMU were created, with meaningful job roles including a Content Creation Intern who will develop assets to support students with disabilities.
All available opportunities are either full- or part-time and are designed to fit flexibly around other commitments. All four will start at the end of Semester 2 and will involve approximately 150 hours of work across the summer months. All interns will be paid the QMU living wage.
Juan Garcia, Employability and Development Advisor at Queen Margaret University, said: The world of work has become increasingly competitive over the last two years - there are now approximately 140 applicants for every graduate job, so we want to do everything we can to give our students the best possible chance at being successful.
QMUs new in-house paid internships programme expands our existing on-campus employment opportunities, such as Student Ambassadors, residents life accommodation support and Peer Assisted Learning Service (PALS) roles, while setting a new benchmark for supporting our students employability.
These internships will help students develop important transferable skills and project management experience which will ensure they are attractive to future employers. Through real-world experience of live projects, we are equipping them to stand out from the crowd when entering the job market.
With 70% of QMU students working while studying, the internships are flexible enough to support those who are also juggling other commitments such as part-time work, or who have caring responsibilities.
The Employability and Development team at QMU is looking to build the number of jobs that will be available to students in the future, hoping to engage all departments in the University.
Murrin Huarachi, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Officer at QMUs Student Union, said: Its fantastic to see QMU offering internships that not only provide valuable work experience but also have a direct impact on student support.
One of these roles focuses on creating content to assist disabled students, which is a crucial step in making university life more accessible and inclusive. Additionally, the internship in the International Office presents a great opportunity for students to gain experience in a globally focused environment. This initiative shows QMUs commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of background or ability, can develop the skills they need for future success.
